| $@%&! level: Low “Bedroom” level: None Violence level: Medium (More running than fighting, really) Back Cover: “The dark, fearsome Ringwraiths were searching for a hobbit. Frodo Baggins knew they were seeking him and the Ring he bore—the Ring of Power that would enable evil Sauron to destroy all that was good in Middle-earth. Now it was up to Frodo and his faithful servant Sam, with a small band of companions, to carry the Ring to the one place it could be destroyed—Mount Doom, in the very center of Sauron's dark kingdom.” |
Also (although several members of my family will be upset with me for saying it) this book contains the literary travesty that is Tom Bombadil. For those of you who don't know, Tom Bombadil was cut from the movies with hardly a ripple, aside from the origin of Merry and Pippin's swords. My personal opinion is that Tolkien put him in there just to make it so something interesting could happen in the forest on the way to Bree, and it wasn't even all that interesting. And my biggest complaint about the whole business is that the hobbits get into a dangerous situation in the middle of a wilderness, one of them goes running along the path screaming for help even though he knows there's no one around to help him, and Tom Bombadil just happens to be there and to know exactly how to save them. It's all just a little too convenient.
You may be getting the impression I didn't like this book very much. You'd be right, although I do very much enjoy the movie. If you were to ask about The Two Towers on the other hand...well, that would be a different story.
